I know most people are more used to using Discord than a web forum at this point, and it might be difficult to keep up with. I found a phpBB extension that adds Discord notifications; so, it would post in a channel whenever there was a new post on the forum. Would anyone be interested in that? It would probably be a new server that's just for this purpose.
My main concern is that this is probably overengineering the problem and I should just let people check the forum when they're going to check the forum. But I also feel like it's going to be difficult to get people to use it and not just immediately forget about it without some assistance.

I think this might be a good idea? If it's not to hard to set up, it wouldn't hurt to try it, see if people like it.

I installed the extension and set it up in a channel in my personal server. It seems to work! Do you think I should create a channel in the TAU 18+ chat, or make a separate server?

The pro of having a channel in the main TAU discord would be that it would be free advertising for the fourm; people who hadn't seen you mention it might notice the channel. Also, most people in the fourm are already members of that server.
The disadvantages are that there's other mods who should probably agree to it, not all members of the fourm are in the TAU chat and I suspect wouldn't want to join for fourm notifs, and the vast majority of Discord users wouldn't care about fourm notifs and would have to mute the channel (not a huge ask but it is a little annoying).
It might make sense to keep it in it's own server, so people who are interested can get them, and people that aren't don't need to take action, but also. Easy advertising.
